THE STORY BEHIND THE ART
The sun lowers behind the trees, its final rays glimmering through branches and trunks. Greens and browns soften as golden light settles across the landscape, marking the quiet close of day. There is beauty here—but also a subtle heaviness, a shift that is felt more than seen.
Sundowning is often associated with the emotional and cognitive changes experienced by people living with Alzheimer’s as evening approaches. But the word came to hold another meaning for me after giving birth. As daylight faded each evening, so did my sense of steadiness. A heaviness would settle in that felt confusing, isolating, and frightening.
It wasn't until a physician gently reframed what I was experiencing as part of my body's recovery that something shifted. I didn't have to fight so hard against what I was feeling. I could acknowledge that I wasn't okay—and trust that I wouldn't always feel this way.
The darkness was real, but it wasn't permanent. Morning would come. The light would return.
Sundowning grew from that experience and from the grace I found in allowing both things to be true at once: there can be darkness, and there can still be hope.
Even here, at the edge of fading light, grace remains
